The story is far more history than fiction. Feel free to look up whether Thomas Jefferson really stuttered or John Adams had slaves working in the President’s House (White House) under the cover of a third-party contractor. Future chapters will see the main character, Buckingham, serve in the Navy on the USS Constitution and be involved in planning the Denmark Vesey Revolt.
Trigger warning: This story may not be for everyone. Buckingham is ultimately forced into becoming a “buck,” forced to mate with enslaved women to breed children. This was not an isolated incident but part of an insidious plan to meet the labor demands of the country. The scenes in the novella are not graphic, but an accurate tale from that era cannot omit forced breeding and rape.
