What Malcolm advocated was self-defense. The FBI monitored and infiltrated every significantly large Black group including fraternities, sororities, Shriners, the NAACP, student organizations. Hoover provided bus schedules of the Freedom Riders and gave local law enforcement (in particular Bull Conner later famous for Bloody Sunday) an amount of time during which they could inflict any harm before stepping in.

During the Trump era, we got to see almost every upper-level decision-maker of the FBI testify on one subject or another and I never saw anyone Black. They did recently hire their first-ever diversity officer but that hasn’t resulted in significant change. At last look 4.7% of their special agents were Black. Somebody has to infiltrate the Black organizations.
