What I'm experiencing at Substack (which I'll write about shortly) would only have been possible because of my Medium experience and relationships. My motives are slightly different in that when I started writing for Medium it was mostly a means to express myself and the money was secondary and now it's a rewarding job, but a job. I would probably start at Medium but quickly duplicate my work at Substack.
