What deserves to be understood clearly is that cotton production rose after the Civil War. The Black Codes and Jim Crow implemented mass incarceration to ensure the workforce required to produce cotton. The 13th Amendment left a provision allowing for the enslavement of prisoners so they just created more prisoners.
