Update From Trump Country
I Used to Commute, Now I Live Here
In December of 2020, I wrote a story about my experiences in Trump Country. I was then commuting on average three days a week. I had met someone special and we spent as much time together as possible, despite living 100 miles apart. Since then we’ve gotten married and I now live in Trump Country, sometimes going the other direction to see children and grandchildren. It’s time to update my story and describe what it’s like living here and not just visiting.
My original story was written not long after the 2020 Presidential election and it’s fair to say feelings were running high about the result. Trump signs were everywhere despite him having lost. People didn’t talk about politics in the workplace. COVID-19 was still rampant and most people wore masks to the grocery store and restaurants that had opened back up.
The people are still generally nice. The neighbors are either friendly or keep to themselves. I walk our dog regularly. People speak when they pass and wave from cars when on the side streets. Only the main streets have…
