"That darker truth was not always part of the public memory in Richmond. In
the early 1990s, human bones and cultural artifacts were discovered some 25 feet
underground during the construction of a new medical building on the campus of
Virginia Commonwealth University, commonly called VCU.
Though the school allowed archaeologists to sift through the site and find
what the Smithsonian Institution later deemed to be a significant discovery, the
university opted to finish construction of the $200 million building.
Without much fanfare, VCU filled the site and paved right over the burial ground."
