The two most frustrating things at Medium are the scammers and the Boost program. The time I spend reporting the same thing over and over along with responding to people alerting me to scams or letting me know they responded to me on WhatsApp will never be replaced. I wonder how much money Medium readers have lost when thinking they were responding to me?
I have been very successful with getting stories Boosted in the past. It required a great amount of research and documention to back up my stories, mostly about history or politics. I've watched the number of Boosted stories decline each month; two in July and zero in August. Editors are still recommending them but Medium staff rejects them, no explanations, no appeals. I used to have a good feel for what might be Boosted, sometimes a story I thought was worthy was rejected (after nomination) a few stories I didn't think should be Boosted somehow were.
From my perspective, it's easy to see how Medium became profitable. They pay writers less for the same work. I've been among the top 6% of earners based on the only measurement I could find based on information released by Medium. This month will be just over half of what I earned last month which was much less than the month before. Your approved editors say they don't know what the standards are any more, at least one has quit the program and you have released others based on "performance."
I still publish on Medium because it's where I write my stories. I'm not here to push other publications but I made up last month's losses in my first month elsewhere. I used to love Medium, now it's like I'm in a relationship I know is ending and don't know how to save it.
