The American Civil War was definitely about slavery, about the Southern fear of the aboloshment of slavery as is made clear in all the states articles of secession. The Northern states and Lincoln himself would have been quite content to allow slavery's continued existence and the war was about preserving the Union and the economy after the Southern states removed themselves.
