Thank you for your reply. You may have missed it but the reference to Eire and when they joined the Commonwealth referred to a time a half-century before Elizabeth became Queen. Eire did originally pledge loyalty to the crown which they got rid of in 1936 while Edward Vlll was King before he abdicated. You are correct in that Ireland never swore loyalty to Elizabeth ll who wasn't crowned until sixteen years later.
You may be correct as to how a monarch is supposed to act, but there are many instances of when they did speak up. Edward Vlll being one example. If you're saying a monarch has to cede and sense or morality to be King/Queen, we'll have to agree to disagree.
