She survived, possibly even thrived under the circumstances. I don’t fault her for any choices she made (not that she truly had any). Tis Jefferson I hold to blame, not only for how he treated her, his children, and other slaves.

Side Note: Each slave family of Jefferson’s got one new blanket every three years. Except while he was President and away when they got none.

Jefferson created the circumstance where it was more profitable to breed and sell slaves than to import them from Africa so he and other Virginia (and Maryland) slaveowners could make larger profits. This led to the forcible repeated rape of thousands of slaves, only to later sell the children. Maybe he was nice to the young slave he held captive all her life. No credit.
