Quitting DeSantis's Private Army

This Isn't What They Signed Up For

If Ron DeSantis were honest, he'd admit that his formation of the Florida Guard was a reaction to the fact he couldn't keep the Florida National Guard from having to get vaccinations. The federal government has oversight of the National Guard, and they could and did require members to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to remain active.

In a fit of spite, Governor DeSantis created his own army, answerable to nobody but him when he re-established the Florida Guard. The original Florida Guard was formed in 1941 during World War II to supplement the Florida National Guard when those troops were called up to fight.

DeSantis initially suggested his army would be used to support the Red Cross and provide aid during emergencies like hurricanes and floods.

“Reestablishing the Florida State Guard will allow civilians from all over the state to be trained in the best emergency response techniques and have the ability to mobilize very, very quickly,” — Ron DeSantis
