Part of the Jefferson hype is that he was a good man that treated his slaves well and that was the custom of the time. John Jay was a founder at the same time and freed his slaves and worked to free all the slaves in his New York. Jefferson had young boys beaten in his nail factory to improve production. I give him little credit at all as a man.
