The late Bobby Womack had a song, “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down and Out.” While Bobby’s version is the most famous among people I know. It was composed by Jimmie Cox in 1923 and performed by Bessie Smith, Eric Clapton, and others.

Once I lived the life of a millionaire, spendin’ my money I didn’t have a care
I carried my friends out for a good time, buying bootleg liquor, champagne and wine
When I begin to fall so low, I didn’t have a friend and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again, I’m gonna hold on to it ’til them eagles grin
Nobody knows you, when you down and out
In my pocket not one penny, and my friends I haven’t any

I can easily picture the soon-to-be former Lt. Governor Mark Robinson of North Carolina, sitting in the dark, slumped in a chair with a near-empty bottle of cheap whiskey on the floor and an empty glass in hand. He’s fallen asleep with drool coming from his mouth onto his blue suit and red tie. Nobody wants you, Mark Robinson…
