I'm going to look at that speech. I have pointed to words and deeds of Lincoln that bring question to his character. He also (reluctantly) issued the Emancipation Proclamation to help win a war during the same few month span in which America recognized the independent Black nations of Liberia and Haiti which had been independent for half a century in Haiti's case. Lincoln was a pragmatist, Frederick Douglass said he was "the white man's President" though that is true of almost all the rest as well. I have friends who feel I am too harsh on Lincoln. We agree to disagree.

Note: I read the speech a few times and can't make the leap to reparations as I understand them to the former slaves, vengeance perhaps. He worried for the lost soldiers, widows, and orphans on both sides. It was still an important speech, but reparations not so much.
