If you throw them away, your moral principals didn’t mean much. In the Northwest Ordinance, you couldn’t have slaves but indentured servants, some of whom were renamed slaves were permitted. Jefferson said some pretty words about the existing inhabitants but things didn’t work out very well for them.

I’m not saying Jefferson never did anything good. But he enabled and enhanced domestic slave breeding and made a lot of money off the rape of slave women. What do you propose should make me forget that?
