I have an ongoing conversation with a good friend where we end up agreeing to disagree about Lincoln. He says Lincoln evolved in his views and was limited in what he can say or do. I say that any of the “good” things Lincoln did were pragmatic and done to win a war after which he hoped to ship Black people away. I’ve never heard him walk back his opinion that Black people were socially inferior and less intelligent and that he would always come down on the side of white people.
