I can't speak specifically to TSU though the Ocean of Soul changed my life when I saw them as a freshman at a Tennessee State game in Nashville. HBCUs have had trouble with accreditation in part because of the standards of the accrediting bodies. One criteria for examble is the percentage of alumni donors which has nothing to do with the quality of the education. Every HBCU has had to battle with providing services with not enough money. They shouldn't take short cuts but i understand. The quality of administrators is related to the budget for salaries which could affect outcomes as well. The last thing I'd say is that HBCU foulups and mismanagement of funds make the front page, not so much with PWIs. There is no pushback for reporting negatively on HBCUs while the big white college may have alumni protecting their name.
