I absolutely think if she weren't Black and was Maria Sharapova or Chris Every she would have generated far more sympathy instead of the attempt to run roughshod over her, damn her mental health. Her activism may have been a factor as well. I happen to have worked for over a dozen years at the US Open, closely with some of the top people at the USTA and got to know the top people of the Arthur Ashe Foundation. Does the USTA and its predecessors have a racist past? Absolutely. Do they currently let their whiteness shine through? The answer is again yes.
