Hello Jude, The boy may have been charged with assault but word sperad of an attempted rape which was what motivated the white mob. I've never heard anything about the National guard "helping" anyone though there is an eyewitnedd account of a National Guard member arriving though there was no suggestion of aid.

Here is a fairly detailed account of the air raids and a suggestion of what airfield they came from and how they deployed the bombs. There is no mention in this story of them being National Guard members though I have seen it elsewhere.
