Hello Andrew, I also reference everything he said during the seven debates with Stephen Douglas and his attempts to convince Black leaders to allow themselves to be deported. The 13th Amendment left a gaping loophole to still enslave convicts and after the immediate passage of the Black Codes (admittedly after Lincoln’s death) a high percentage of slaves ended up convicted of crimes (like being unemployed or breaking a Black-only curfew) and therefore still slaves, often at the very same plantations, they were freed from. He also chose a segregationist Vice-President that ended up undoing much that was accomplished during the Civil War. Sure, I could make a list of positive things Lincoln did but that doesn’t erase the rest.
