He says "I" because he can only speak for himself. While they've known each other over thirty years, the last 25 have been in different cities, each having been involved with others. He's now saying the things he never said before, trying to convince her of a future together.

He remembers their first kiss and the last. The first time he visited her home, watching her spontaneously waltz across the floor as a Christmas tune played. When he gave her an unexpected gift, he received the best hug he'd ever gotten, none have rivaled it since.

He remembers 4-hour rides between Nashville and Atlanta that never lacked for conversation. Sunday dinners with her family. Going to the lake at midnight, going to the fair. There are no shortage of memories.
