I judge Jefferson by what he did, not what he said or wrote. His slaves were beaten at Monticello, he freed 4 slaves during his lifetime of the 600+ he owned. Ending the importation of slaves only increased the value of domestic-bred slaves. He was personally enriched in 1808 when he ended the International Slave Trade. He broke his promise to free his own children when they came of age.
