Haiti never developed a sustainable economy because of the continued demand for payment to France as the price of freedom and a ban on the import of Haitian goods to most Europea countries and the United States, led by Thomas Jefferson. The Western world conspired to make Haiti a failure because they couldn't be allowed to be an example of success.

You see Nat Turner's Revolt as a failure and in the short term it had little chance of success. Long term, the combined threats from Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, Gabriel Prosser, the German Coast Rebellion, the Haitian Revolution and countless other uprisings helped create the need to change the equation.

I'm curious as to your thopughts about how Reconstruction was "cut short?" I attribute it to Republicans and Democrats reaching an agreement after the contested election of 1876 leading to the Compromise of 1877 and Posse Comitatus the following year. The Democrats took the South back over and Republicans looked away for the next several decades.

You point to the failures of Nat Turner as if there was no price to be paid for doing nothing? The one thing made clear was that the continuation of slavery led to increasingly severe repercussions which may have been the point.
