“Free health care” is only slightly sarcastic. Female slaves were an investment and experienced a high mortality rate. Some were used in experimental procedures (without anesthesia) including C-sections and ovariotomies. Before the Tuskeegee syphilis studies and similar experiments in Indiana and Guatemala. Female slaves were often the test subjects that helped advance American medicine.
